The Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus near the beginning of his ministry

  • Simon: called Peter
  • Andrew: brother of Peter, a Bethsaida fisherman
  • James: ("the Great")
  • John:  called by Jesus Boanerges (Sons of Thunder in Mk 3:17)
  • Philip: from Bethsaida "of Galilee" (John 1:44, 12:21)
  • Bartholomew: son of Talemai
  • Thomas: also known as Judas Thomas Didymus -(twin)
  • James: ("the Less"), son of Alphaeus
  • Judas Thaddeus: Brother of James
  • Matthew: the tax collector
  • Simon:  " The Zealot " " Simeon of Jerusalem"
  • Judas Iscariot: Betrayer of Jesus 
  • The identity of the other apostle of the twelve varies between the Synoptic Gospels and also between ancient manuscripts of each gospel:
    • Mark names him as Thaddaeus
    • Some manuscripts of Matthew also identify him as Thaddeus
